Book Tour

This remote area expedition and tag along into the south-western portion of the little Sandy Desert offers participants an opportunity to experience a vast variety of arid zone plants, birds, Aboriginal art and outback scenery. Join us as we head north through Mt Magnet and Marymia station to the remote Carnarvon Range Conservation Park...

The Carnarvon Range Conservation Park covers 390,000ha and is situated in the southwest section of the Little Sandy Desert between the Great Northern Highway in the west, the Canning Stock Route in the east, Mt Essendon (the highest point) in the North and Mt Methwin in the south.

The Park offers visitors a remarkable range of spectacular geology. Cross-bedded red sandstone takes the form of low undulating hills, occasional steep cliffs and gullies with semi permanent pools. Plains and sand ridges are found at the base of the hills.

There are over 400 vascular plants that have been identified in the Park. The vegetation is mainly tall open-shrub land (acacia, grevillea and hakea), low woodland of mulga and gidgee. The dunes have a low open woodland of sand dune bloodwood and acacia.

Eighty plus species of birds have been sighted in the area. Past sightings include a wide range of hawks, honey eaters, pardalote, and night birds.

There is also a strong Aboriginal history in the area and we will spend time looking at some of the area's art sites.

Leaving the Park for our homeward journey we will travel through the Blue Hills Station to the southern end of the Canning Stock Route then onto Wiluna, Sandstone, Paynes Find and New Norcia.
