Lord Howe Island is breathtakingly beautiful and one of the worlds most fascinating natural history destinations. Join Ian Hutton - Lord Howe Island's resident expert - as he shows you this nature lover's paradise.

Lord Howe Island is situated approximately 700 km north east of Sydney in the South Pacific Ocean. The island was inscribed on the World Heritage list in 1982. The listing was for its outstanding natural universal values.

The island's magnificent landscape is dominated by twin peaks Mount Gower and Mount Lidgbird, both of which tower above the central lowlands and the surrounding sea.

There are over 240 species of native plants recorded on Lord Howe with over 100 of these being endemic. Species flowering during the tour will be the Pumpkin Tree, Fitzgeraldii Tree, which takes on a giant form on the island, and the Mountain Daisy.

The Island also has an extensive number of seabird species with many of their colonies numbering in the hundreds of thousands. Visiting these colonies will be one of the many highlights of this tour. We expect to see Providence, Kermadec and Black Winged Petrel as well as extensive breeding colonies of the Flesh-Footed and Wedge Tailed Shearwaters, Masked Booby, Black Noddy, Sooty Tern and there will be many Red-tailed Tropic birds breeding on the cliff faces. The island forests are also home to 18 species of landbirds of which the rarest is the endangered Woodhen.

The seas around the island offer a great mix of tropical and temperate marine life. We will spend time exploring these wonders with reef walks, beachcombing, snorkelling and a glass bottom boat cruise.

Each day we will visit different parts of the island learning about its history, flora, fauna, marine life and geology. The walks range from easy to strenuous (Mt Gower is optional).

There is ample time and flexibility in the itinerary for individual and group interests to be enjoyed. Evening talks and slide shows will be available to add to your island experience. Reference books on the history and natural history (mostly written By Ian Hutton) will be available during the tour.
